Children and Reception of the Sacraments

Reception of the sacraments – Baptism, Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation – are central  to a Catholic Christian identity. At one time, sacramental preparation was done in the schools and reception of the sacraments was a class celebration. When this was the process, all children in our schools received the sacraments.

However, the practice now is for families, supported by the parish and schools, to take responsibility for preparing their child(ren) to receive the sacraments. Unfortunately, due to many circumstances facing families today, many children are not enrolled to prepare for and receive the sacraments.

Parents who have not had their children prepare for and receive the sacraments but would be willing to have their child(ren) receive the sacraments are invited to contact the parish or their children's school. The pastoral team at St. Joseph’s and Immaculate Conception will provide any support families need to ensure their child shares this common identity with their fellow classmates and teachers.
